Preceptorships

Dr. Brett Thombs with a rheumatology preceptee.Recruiting more quality rheumatology professionals starts with building interest in the field among the best and brightest medical and graduate students and residents.

Preceptorships encourage students and residents to learn more about rheumatology and pursue careers in the field by supporting a one-on-one, real-world learning experience. 


Rheumatology Future Physician Scientist Award 

This research training experience is expected to tangibly enhance the individuals’ potential to develop into a productive, independent physician-scientist in the field of rheumatology.

Purpose
Enhance the research training of promising students who are enrolled in a MD or DO training program, including individuals enrolled in combined degree programs (e.g., MD/PhD, DO/PhD program, MD/MPH, DO/MPH or equivalent) and who intend careers as physician-scientists. 

Award Amount
Up to 30,000 per year in direct costs (maximum $60,000 over 2 years)

Award Term
1 year with option for competitive renewal for 1 additional year

Medical and Graduate Student Preceptorship

A full-time clinical or research mentorship with an established rheumatology professional; students can choose a four- or eight-week clinical preceptorship or an eight-week research preceptorship.

Purpose
Encourage medical and graduate students to consider a career in rheumatology

Award Amount
$2,000-$4,000 plus $1,000 for travel expenses and complimentary registration to ACR Convergence

The Lawren H. Daltroy Preceptorship in Health Communication was established with the aim of improving patient-clinician interactions and communications.

Purpose

Provide resources to support the training, career development, and/or enhancement of research skills and researchers and clinicians, with no current or prior R01 or R01-equivalent funding
